Ballet 19/20 Season | Lifestyle

The National Ballet of Canada has dropped their 2019/2020 season and it is FIRE.

For one thing, Karen Kain is celebrating 50 years with the National Ballet and has put together an amazing repertoire. Her career is honestly so fascinating, and she’s done wonderful work as the current Artistic Director.

As always, the season runs from November to June, with the ballet corps travelling in the summer. It’s the only reason for me to be excited and wanting November to come sooner rather than later.

Fall Season

Giselle Nov 6-10 This has been done in previous seasons, but I missed it the first time around (it’s been a couple years since it’s been on the National Ballet Stage). I’m definitely interested in seeing it this time!

Orpheus Alive & Chaconne Nov 15 -21 This seems fascinating! Orpheus Alive is a modern take on the Greek myth, but it’s genderswapped! I love me a good old gender flip so that’s right up my alley. Plus, it’s a great Greek myth. Chaconne is also based on the same myth, but the Operatic version. Needless to say – this medley is going to be amazing.

Etudes & Piano Concerto #1 & Petite Mort Nov 27 – Dec 1 This will be a pretty classic ballet medley repertoire. Just pretty to see and it’ll be interesting to have just the piano concerto.

The Nutcracker Dec 12 – Jan 4 A holiday classic for sure! I did this one year, and have skipped it since. I’ll probably start going again once Kaiden is a little older to sit through it! (If he shows the interest)

Winter Season

New Crystal Pite (unnamed) & Chroma & Marguerite and Armand Feb 29 Mar 1 and Mar 18 -21 If you’re only going to see one medley performance, this probably should be the one. A new work created by Canadian Choreographer Crystal Pite, plus Chroma and Marguerite & Armand which is based off an Alexandre Dumas filsbook.

Romeo and Juliet Mar 5-15 A classic! Another one that is back that I missed the first time around, I’m looking forward to seeing the ballet interpretation.

Summer Season

Swan Lake June 5-21 This is the one to watch for. Everything is going to be amazing on the roster, but this one is going to be restaged and designed by Karen Kain in honour of her 50th anniversary. If you go and see only one full length piece, make it this one. It’s going to be amazing.

Mad Hot Ballet Gala

Write the date in your phones, June 9th 2020 the MAD HOT BALLET presents their gala soiree! I haven’t been in the past couple years (I blame children!) And I’ll be missing out this year (the theme is Desert Dreams, I suggest checking it out!) since it’s pretty much the same day as my due date… But I’m definitely going to make a night out for the 2020 gala.

Anything catch your eye on this list? Have you been to the gala? The ballet is always such a lovely day out and you’re supporting the arts! And there is so much talent in this city!
