Lights ‘We Were Here’ Tour | Life

Skin & Earth, the latest album from Lights is one of my favourite albums of all time.

So when Lights announced her North American tour, I knew that I was going to jump at the chance to see her live. I am living for this album, I recommend it to everyone, it’s just so damn good.

She drew a comic to go with the album, and the music videos are the comics brought to life. It’s visually and vocally, a work of art.

I’ve listened to and been a fan of Lights since the beginning, but none of her albums hit me quite like this one has.

All of the songs on this album are great, it doesn’t matter what order it’s in I can listen to it all day every day. Although I do have favourites, they are all worth the listen. I think that “Savage” and “New Fears” and “Moonshine” are my top faves from the album though.

She released one of the songs “Giants” in multiple languages and I bought the Japanese version. Totally worth the money. I think I’ve spent more money on this one album release than I’ve ever spent. I want the comic book, but I just haven’t made that splurge yet. I’m waiting for a specific cover of the comic that got sold out before I make the purchase, and next time I won’t wait!

The concert was an absolute rock show.

I’ve never been to a concert in Kitchener before, but I love when they’re at smaller venues. I like not having a seat and being able to dance and move up close to the stage. I didn’t move too close to the stage, but I was pleased with where we ended up. If it were rows, we were about 4 rows back.

There were 2 opening acts: DCF and Dear Rouge.

Yay for a night of Canadian talent!

DCF was good – I hadn’t heard of him, but he’s definitely worth checking out. He played a couple songs and did an acoustic version of Paramore’s ‘Misery Business’ (what a throwback!) that was interesting. It took me such a long while to place the song in its original form – I knew the words I just couldn’t hear it!

I first saw Dear Rouge at Wayhome in 2015 and loved them. They recently released an album (which I haven’t listened too in full yet) and played a couple songs from that and their older stuff. I absolutely love her stage presence and their songs are so catchy. Plus her band is pretty awesome!

And then it was time for Lights!

She opened up with New Fears, and just continually killed it all night. I don’t even remember how many songs she did – but she did nine songs off her new album, plus about three songs from each of her older albums. Oh, and she did one Cher song (Do You Believe in Love). She played from 9.15 to 10.45 with 2 slight intermissions, plus the encore. I danced all freaking night, and at one point I almost teared up (darn Mom emotions!).

I can’t ever really put into words how music makes me feel, but there’s just something about the Skin & Earth album that just reaches me on such a personal level. I absolutely love it, and love Lights. I just realized that there’s one album that I haven’t listened to at all (whoops) so I’m going to check that out now.

Her stage presence is amazing as well and I loved that she talked to the crowd and gave some background to her songs and albums. It just makes the experience so much better. I would definitely go see her live again!

It was so great to get out and listen to some live music, have dinner with a friend and just get out and not be “Mom” for a night. Even though it was a late night (didn’t get home until 12.30am) but it was so worth it. Even if I was a zombie this morning until I got my morning caffeine!

I absolutely love concerts. I never liked them when I was younger but I am 100% a concert convert. How about you?
