Home Renovation Round 1

Nothing like a good old home renovation alongside another home renovation, right?

Time for some real talk here. Shh, we’re not talking about the basement renovation that’s 8 years and counting?

We’re talking about the bedroom renovation!!!

So, this has been about 3 years in the making. We discussed renovating the bedroom – mainly creating a built-in closet in all the bedrooms. We managed to get the boys’ room’s done back in 2021 (I posted about it here) and we are now finally getting to our bedroom.

For our bedroom, we wanted to do the built-in closet as well as a built-in bookshelf/bed frame. We’ve changed the colour that we were going to do but of course, the built-in bookshelf requires removing the bulkhead from the ceiling. This is a pretty major renovation since it’s easier said than done.

Andrew does like to do a little extra work for himself because he’s obviously fixing the cracks that have happened over the years, but he’s also skimming the ceiling because he doesn’t like that it looks like an orange peel (his words). And of course, then he has to fix the walls because it’s old drywall which made the walls look ‘wavy’.

All of it is being built right now and hopefully, Andrew will get everything finished soon! Sanding needs to be completed, and then another layer probably. Then another sand, and then install time!

Then painting. I’m trying to figure out what colour we are going to paint the walls. I think we’re staying within the greys but who knows? I’m scrolling Instagram for inspo right now.

In the meantime…

The house is a literal disaster. I power-cleaned out the whole bedroom in a day and put everything into boxes for storage in the (unfinished) basement. But there’s just so much stuff!! Our bed is currently squished in the toy room (and it barely fits) while our clothing is stuffed into the boys’ closets. Stuff just seems to be exploding out of every conceivable space upstairs.

I cannot wait until I can reorganize everything. I realize now that I am a full-ass adult when the idea of reorganizing spaces excites me. Some of my books haven’t seen the light of day in over 3 years. Some I don’t think I’ve seen since we had kids and put it all away for the babies’ rooms. The crawlspace will be practically empty when I get all the boxes of books out of there and into the shelves. Then I’ll sort through the older kids’ clothing boxes under there and maybe give it a quick wash because some of it smells musty AF.

I also have CLOTHING that I haven’t seen in 3 years in storage!! I’m very excited to get those boxes out and cleaned. Might mean that another purge will be in the plans because I obviously haven’t worn it in 3 years. It might not fit or be my style anymore. I am giddy with excitement about that part.

Once the organization happens, then…

I am going to do my bi-annual deep clean of the (unfinished) basement and make that look a little less like a disaster. Plus I’ll clean around the laundry room and make that nicer to be in as well.

Then the microwave will come out of the basement and be installed. It’s a hood range microwave and also requires some minor demolition to install. So that means that the kitchen cabinets are on the list to get reorganized and cleaned! Spring cleaning is just a couple of weeks late.

Andrew did just demo the wall and install the waterline for the pot filler over the stove as well. It’s all the little things getting done around that house!

And, of course, when it rains, right? I went to fix one of my pictures on the wall (the biggest focal piece) and it literally fell off into my hands. So now I’m thinking that I’ll just extend the gallery wall over and that means I need to print off some family pictures. I’m just not sure if I want to do an eclectic wall or something more minimal and uniform. Again, I’ll be scrolling Pinterest for inspo!

I also need to pick out wallpaper for the headboard area! So I’m on the hunt for one that I love because the one that sparked the idea isn’t sold anymore. We took too long and I just never bought it when I should have.

This is super exciting and I hope to have another renovation update next month!

Any questions or want to see something specific? Let me know!
