Review :: Austenland

Don’t you just love when you’re scrolling through Netflix and something that looks so terrible turns out to be a guilty pleasure?

That’s what happened with the movie Austenland. One of those it’s just another corny rom-com (which I’m a sucker for, anyways) but it turns out to be so much more. Send me all the feels.

Jane Hayes, who is obsessed with Pride and Prejudice, is unlucky in love. Always comparing her boyfriends to the perfect(ly fictional) Mr. Darcy, she embarks on a journey to Austenland, stepping into a role-playing past complete with happy ending. But is it?

I watched the movie before I realized that it was based on a book, and then I read the book. Both are good in their own right, but I won’t lie when I say that I definitely glad about some of the changes that the movie made from the book.

The book was good. An easy, quick read at only 127 pages, it was lighthearted and of course gave more back story to Jane and her obsession. Honestly, who hasn’t been there? Fictional characters are perfect. The guys are always ridiculously chiseled, and say and do all the right things (or at least get there eventually… depending on the romance). The slight differences in the story from the movie don’t detract from it, and you do find yourself rooting for Jane to get over Mr. Darcy all while still hoping that she finds him.

I absolutely love the movie though. Keri Russell (Jane) and J.J. Fields (Nobley) chemistry is on point, and there are just so many deliciously cute scenes between them. I feel that’s all that needs to be said about that… Just go watch it! I found out that they cut out a scene that I definitely think should have been kept in just for the butterfly feels, but I can see why they cut it. If the movie doesn’t make you want to run out and get on a plane to England, then… I don’t know what will. Also, shout out to Georgia King and Jennifer Coolidge for ridiculous, on-point comedy relief as well.

You’ll like this if you liked What Happens in Vegas, What’s Your Number, and Pride and Prejudice.
