On My Shelf: The Ordinary Hair Care Line | Beauty

New hair care from The Ordinary?

Colour me intrigued. I’ve been a huge fan and huge supporter of The Ordinary since way back in the day. This is their first real foray into the hair care world and I knew I had to try it out. They’ve created a shampoo, conditioner, hair density serum, and moisturizing serum. It’s a small line but sometimes smaller is better!

Don’t quote me on this because I literally can’t find any support on this anymore, but I’m pretty sure that my first Deciem hair product was GrowGorgeous. It was an 11-in-1 conditioner but now looks like it’s a standalone company? Or it was one that Deciem just stocked? I’m not sure and I really can’t remember, it was a long time ago.

Anyway, it didn’t work for me because of the scent (I’m extremely sensitive) and if you read my terrible review from 2015, I mention it there. But the general concept was super cool and definitely up my alley.

I want to preface this review so I’m completely transparent. I have scalp issues. I’ve recently had a flare-up which is probably the worst I’ve seen in the past couple of years so I did have to take a break from the serums. I currently making appointments to figure it out and get an actual diagnosis. I will be starting a medicated treatment soon, but I will update this review once my issues have been sorted.

Sulphate 4% Shampoo Cleanser for Body & Hair

The Ordinary, as always, takes a scientific approach to these products. Their stance is that sulphates are good cleansers in smaller percentages. Still get the squeaky clean, without the harmful effects on your hair.

The Sulphate 4% shampoo is pretty neat. There is barely any lather or bubbles so at first, it feels weird. It doesn’t feel like the hair is getting washed at all! But you can definitely tell once you get out and dry your hair.

I found that this shampoo was pretty awesome. It’s not being touted as some amazing fix-all product so while I used this on my (extremely irritated) scalp, it definitely didn’t do anything for my issues BUT it didn’t make it any worse either. There are zero scents which I’m particularly pleased about and you really can’t go wrong with the price.

The one thing that did throw me even more than the no-lather situation was how runny the shampoo is. It does make it hard to feel like all my hair is getting proper application of the product.

It is a small bottle, so I would like to think that if the product does will they will consider making a bigger bottle. This will last me a while because I do mix and match shampoos and I really don’t use anything more than twice in a row.

I’ve never used it as a body wash (and really don’t have any plans to) so I’m not going to comment on its effectiveness. I think that it’s a cool notion, especially for men. If they aren’t interested in skin care, this would be a great choice as an overall cleanser.

Behentrimonium Chloride 2% Conditioner

I didn’t expect to like this as much as I did.

Conditioners to me, are generally an extra step in the shower that I’d much rather skip in favour of just using a leave-in conditioner. But this has me changing my mind!

The Behentrimonium Chloride conditioner is definitely a thicker product than its shampoo counterpart but it makes my hair feel nice. As it’s so thick you really don’t need a lot of product. I use it all over my head and it’s one of the nicer conditioners I’ve used.

I love that it’s still at the under $10 price point and works great with any shampoo, not just the Ordinary Sulphate one. The smaller bottle will last me forever (conditioner always does) because I use such a small amount.

Natural Moisturizing Factors + Hyaluronic Acid Scalp Serum

Sometimes it’s funny how life works. I feel like I literally said out loud one day, I wish there was something that had Hyaluronic Acid but for my scalp. What feels like the next day I saw this on the Ordinary’s Instagram. Their new Natural Moisturising serum WITH HYALURONIC ACID. FOR THE SCALP. I don’t usually see manifesting work that fast but DAMN. I immediately jumped to buy this guy.

I’m undecided on if this works. Like I said in the beginning, my scalp got so bad that this wasn’t going to do anything. I’m waiting to clear up my scalp more before I start using this to see if it helps prevent the dryness that I seem to get regardless of my scalp issue.

I do like the milky texture. It didn’t make my hair immediately greasy or oily-looking which is a huge bonus. The serum goes on at night (which is fine) but I don’t shower in the morning or wash my hair everyday so it’s nice to know that even using this daily it didn’t exacerbate the grease.

It did make my hair feel really nice. I will continue to use this one and test it out and update this post when I’ve got more feedback.

Multi-Peptide Serum for Hair Density

This Multi-peptide serum is oil based so while this goes on at night as well. It did make my hair look greasy in the morning. Definitely more flat and heavier.

I do think that’s mainly a hair texture thing? Some of my friends with curly, drier hair love this product and do repurchase it. I love the idea of it, but I haven’t really used it enough to figure out how well it’d work for me.

It says to put on dry hair but it might work better for me to apply on damp hair so I can blow dry it? I’ll try it out and post the results.

The Results

My hair was SO shiny and so light and has so much movement using these products. If you are looking for a basic shampoo that won’t strip your hair, this is it. I would definitely repurchase both of these products. I think that this will be great as an in-between shampoo to lessen the harshness of medicated shampoos, without causing a flare-up in between.

If I had to pick between the 2 serums, the hydrating one would be my go-to. Still extremely affordable at under $15. These will last a while since you only need to use a few drops in an area. The overall oil based product just doesn’t quite float my boat. I do find myself not picking it up after the shower.

I’m continually impressed with the Ordinary line up. While there are hits and misses, I think they’re on the right track with their hair care.

Are you going to try anything from this line? Let me know!
