Hard to believe it, but Andrew and I welcomed our second son to the world on June 5th!
I’d like to introduce Eli!
He was born at 5.07am on June 5th, and it wasn’t the smoothest ride! Good thing I’m not doing this again because I’m 0/2 with having my babies facing the right way upon delivery. Boys, amirite? But he was a healthy 7lbs 9oz and 50cm long.
I was induced a week-ish earlier than my delivery date due to a low hormone that I got flagged with early in my pregnancy. I have to say – it was quite relaxing knowing that I had a date to look forward to and be able to get everything sorted and prepped for that date. Of course, there was always the chance that he could come early, but knowing an end date was in sight reduced the anxiety a lot.
I called in the morning and was told when to come in. It worked out perfectly because Kaiden was already at my mom’s so I didn’t have to worry about getting someone to pick him up or drop him off. Andrew and I got to sleep in a little bit, finish off the cleaning around the house. I got to eat a little more than the last time (so I could keep up my energy) and then the time came!
Time to head to the hospital!
Honestly, what a difference from last time. I don’t remember too much about the drive/check-in with Kaiden. This time I was completely coherent and able to check myself in. They took me to the delivery room and got me all settled, and then it was just relaxing from there. I had to get antibiotics because I was Group B Strep positive, so they gave me those before breaking my water and starting the Pitocin to induce.
So while I got to the hospital at 1pm, the process didn’t actually start until 4pm when they broke my water. Then I was just waiting. I didn’t start feeling contractions until about 8pm which is when I got an epidural. Breaking my water was definitely a most unpleasant feeling. I think it’s the fact that you can’t control the fluids coming out that make it unpleasant.
Anyways, I was able to sleep quite a bit to conserve energy, but around 9pm I was fully dilated and really just waiting for him to want to come. He decided that he wasn’t going to come easy though. He was face up and chin out, with his face pressed up against my pelvis and cervix. He wasn’t in any distress so we decided to just wait and see if he’d sort himself out.
By 2 am, he was sorted enough that it was worth trying to see if we could push him out naturally. After 3 hours of pushing, we were down to our last options before a c-section. We used a little vacuum and my OB pulled while I pushed. And he popped out! Thankfully with no need for any surgery.
Then it was just time to recover.
I spent 2 nights in the hospital – one night in delivery and one night in recovery. Which was pretty much the same with Kaiden. The joy of having babies in the night (and not doing the midwife route). Andrew stayed the first night with me during the delivery, and most of the day. Then he went home with Kaiden and I was alone with Eli for the second night.
During the day, Kaiden and our immediate family came by to see Eli. Kaiden wasn’t 100% sure what was going on and didn’t really understand why I was in the hospital bed. He didn’t want to be on the bed when I was in it.
He was much more interested when Andrew and Kaiden came to pick me up the next morning. I wasn’t looking as “sick” or upset so Kaiden was happier to check out the bed and push the buttons.
And then we were home!
I can’t quite believe that Eli’s been around for 2 weeks, and it’s been going really well. Andrew stayed home for the first week, and that was definitely such a great help. We got into a routine with 2 kids and this past Monday I had my first day home with both boys. It was a bit nerve-wracking but we got through it! And it wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought it would be. There are things that can be improved as we go along, but I’ll work out those kinks eventually.
But it was good to be home and sleeping in my own bed. I’ll do a little more of an update as we go along, but again, I’m not sure how much I want to share. My Insta-stories is the best place to get real-time updates.
