Toronto :: Royal Agricultural Winter Fair

Last night, I headed downtown with my mom and brother for the Royal Winter Fair. This would be our first time ever going on a weeknight, and honestly, I think we’re changed people. It’s so much nicer, not so many crowds, you’re able to see the booths and talk with the people!

Just because he looks boss.
Typically, every year it’s all about the horses and the horse shopping that I can do. We usually go see a horse show or rodeo, and then we do all the shopping for new barn clothes or something of the like. This year, was a complete step out of the box for us. Going on a week night was the first step out of the box, total rebels we are. The second was not really oohing and ahhing over all the horses. We looked at them, but didn’t stand around for hours watching them get all purtied up. We didn’t even walk through the cow barn, and breezed through the goats and lambs.
This year, it was all about the food. We browsed through all of the booths, but nothing really stood out for me in the way of horse-y related items. We spent the most amount of time perusing the delicious items of food from Ontario. We tasted birch syrup and had a lovely conversation with the woman who has friends on the same lake as Andrew’s cottage… Small world. We tasted amazing maple butter, and talked to the gentleman who directed us to said birch syrup, as well as amazingly delicious goat cheese. From there we decided that we were hungry, and went and grabbed dinner. Peameal on a bun, bison burger, and rosti. All so delicious, we ate it all before I even thought to take a picture.

We wandered around and finished browsing before we made any purchase. I found Andrew’s parents Christmas gift there [Hallelujah], and picked up the Apple butter that I’ve been fiending all year. We headed back to the gentleman with Maple butter, and I picked up some of his beeswax candles and soap. His soap smells divine, honey and lemongrass. Resisted buying the maple butter, as I didn’t really need it, and have no money for it. We checked out the other “bee” stand, and were surprised to find out that it was his father’s booth. Talking about the bees got my brother interested in thinking about becoming a beekeeper. I think it would be awesome. We also picked up the goat cheese. 3 different flavours of chevre: herb and garlic, cranberry and honey, blueberry and honey. We also picked up goat cheese cheddar. So delicious. I can’t wait until that one is in stores! The best part about all of this? All made in Canada, and better yet, Ontario. Support the locals!

We finished the night at the petting farm, and they had the CUTEST BABY GOATS. I want one. I took the most pictures here, of course. They were adorbs. Beyond. Totes. I don’t even like the word “totes” but they were.
If you’re in the Toronto/GTA area, I definitely recommend going to see this. It’s amazing all the stuff that’s there, and what a great time you can have just trying samples of local wares.
