Toronto :: 2017-2018 National Ballet Season

It’s hard to believe that the 2017-2018 National Ballet season has already been announced.

When the e-mail dropped on my phone, I could barely contain my excitement. I immediately jumped to the website to see what awesomeness the National Ballet had in store for us.

If you’ve read my blog before, you’ll know that I’m a huge supporter of the ballet, and over the past 7 or 8 years have been to at least one a year, but usually two or three. I’m still gutted that I most likely won’t be able to attend this year’s performance of A Streetcar Named Desire (sigh, pregnancy) (more like sigh, birth) but I’m able to see Pinocchio and Genus. Pinocchio will be my first National Ballet performance since Le Petit Prince back in June of 2016.

I didn’t go to the gala last year either, the  timing of it all just didn’t work out for me. I probably won’t be able to make this year’s either… what, with the bambino.

Anyways, this is the 2017-2018 season:

The Winter’s Tale

November 10-19, 2017

Based on the Shakespeare play of the same name, and choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon. One that’s come back from the past couple years, it’s definitely a little more intense and tragic.

Nijinsky

November 22-26, 2017

Based on the life of the male ballet dancer, Vaslav Nijinsky. Hailed as a great modern piece of work!

The Nutcracker

December 9 – 30, 2017

Always a winter classic! Not one that I find I need to see year after year, but in the next coming years I’ll definitely be bringing the bambino along!

Made In Canada: The Dreamers Ever Leave Us, The Four Seasons, & Emergence

February 28- March 4, 2018

The first mixed programme of the year, and it’s a collection of 3 Canadian choreographers that are working today. This one I’m so excited for because I wasn’t able to make the AGO performance that happened last August/September (as I was traveling), and there’s going to be a piece from it in this collection.

The Sleeping Beauty

March 8-18, 2018

One of the first ballets that I went to see, and one of my favourite stories! Such a stunning piece of work, and definitely one to see.

Frame By Frame

June 1 -10, 2018

One of the world premier’s: another of Guillaume Cote’s works! I absolutely love watching his growth as a choreographer, and he is fantastic. This is a must see on my list!

Paz de la Jolla & Dark Angels & Cacti

June 16-22, 2018

I love the mixed pieces that the National Ballet puts together, and it’s pretty much my mission to not miss any of them. Plus, Cacti is FANTASTIC and worth the watch again. Plus, Dark Angels is another Guillaume Cote work as well. Winning!

The Gala takes place on June 13, 2018, and the theme will be released later in the year… Probably closer to 2018.

I’m so excited for this season, and hopefully I’ll be able to go to all the ones that I want too, and won’t be too tired or poor from the baby! Will you be attending the ballet this year?
