What did you end up doing for Father’s Day?
I had planned out my Dad’s day about a month in advance. Normally, my brother and I don’t do much for this day, mainly because my dad is extremely hard to buy for. But I found out about an event that I knew he wouldn’t want to miss.
My dad is completely into war, planes, and history, so when I heard that the Canadian War Plane Heritage Museum in Hamilton, ON was having a SkyFest event on Father’s Day weekend, I knew that I had to take my dad. I showed it to my brother, and we asked Dad if he wanted to go (he doesn’t do well with surprises). Tickets purchased, and we were counting down the days!
It was an easy drive out there, a little further than I thought it would be. In the middle of nowhere, but a very pretty drive through Hamilton. A little harrowing because I almost ran out of gas, but it all worked out! We arrived safe and sound, and got immediately to looking at all the planes.
We arrived around lunch time, and ended up spending all day there (we didn’t leave until about 5.30). They had planes flying over, starting up, and you could pay to go up in the air in one of the planes. When we weren’t outside looking at the planes, we were inside looking at even more planes. We were able to walk through the Lancaster plane, they had a little book sale – my brother and dad managed to pick up 5 books about planes and boats for $4. And these are big hard covers!
It was a very cool place, and it was neat to see all the work that goes into restoring the planes that they currently have. A lot of the money that they raise goes towards restoration of planes and keeping them in working shape. Definitely worth checking out if you, or someone you know is interested in our history. They have many more events happening this summer, which you can find on their website.
Just a little accident – I’m not sure what happened but the propeller hit the ground, and it ended up like that! A little bit of excitement, but not good for the plane!!
We waited until the 4 plane flyover happened, and then we took off for home. A family dinner once we got home, and a very successful Father’s day out. What did you get up to?
