Toronto :: WayHome 2016 Day One

Wayhome 2016. What a weekend.

I’ll admit when the lineup was released, I was a little underwhelmed. No one really jumped out at me other than Major Lazer in a way that had me super excited for it. Honestly, since it was purchased so early in the year, I almost forgot about it.

To get more excited, I did my due diligence and researched more of the artists. But there wasn’t really anyone that I absolutely couldn’t miss on my list this year.

Wayhome-01

Oh boy. Once we got there though – What a different story. We left late on Thursday night, and arrived pretty much just before the gates closed (1.30am because we’re crazy). I will give kudos to Wayhome this year though – it was way more organized in regards to RV’s. The only upsetting/annoying thing is that it’s very difficult to find any sort of consistency with their security. Since we had an RV, the security guards were arguing amongst themselves about our propane tanks. They wanted to take the ones that were attached to the RV (hello, they’re attached. They can’t go anywhere) and they ended up taking our larger one.

But going through the campgrounds we definitely saw many sites that still were allowed to keep theirs (or just hid them better). Regardless, it was a little annoying. But the RV section was all together, and the tents were all together. We were a further walk than last year, but we were close to the exit so that made for a quick getaway on the Sunday night.

Since we arrived so late, we did the bare minimum of set up, walked around to get the lay of the grounds, while the boys made some food. We ended up going to bed around 4am. Almost able to watch the sunrise, but I was toasted and went to bed. We had a busy weekend planned ahead of us!

Day One – Friday

Wayhome-04

Up at a decent time, the start of Wayhome is always a little slow for us. I didn’t really have too many bands that I wanted to check out, and nothing early. The rest of the group wanted to check out more bands, so I tagged along with them. We were expecting another buddy to come up, and he made it just after 3.30pm.

Friday’s Bands:

Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats – They were pretty good. I missed their popular song, but I decided that I needed water and waiting in line for about 30 minutes to get some… which is really just unacceptable. I was so thirsty by the time I got water… felt like I needed to line back up for more again. Silly!

Metric – I’d never seen them live before, and they were pretty good. I’m still not the biggest fan of their music, but it was definitely enjoyable!

Wayhome-Chvrches-01

Chvrches – One of the highlighted bands for me to see this year.  And they didn’t disappoint!! She rocked it out on stage, and she’s so much tinier than I thought! Super cute, the music was amazing, and left me wanting more.

LCD Soundsystem – They were alright. They had a long time slot, and I didn’t really know anything about them beforehand. Not one of the bands that I made sure to listen to first. It got super cold once the sun went down, so I headed back to the trailer to put some clothes on, grab some food, before heading back to the festival grounds.

Mac Demarco – I really had no idea what to expect from the late night stuff, but Mac Demarco was pretty good. Definitely a good way to start off the late night crowd, and so much crowd surfing! We ducked out of his set a little early to head to Keys and Krates.

Keys and Krates – These guys were epic. I didn’t know that they did the one song from the show LetterKenny, but I freaked when I heard it. Danced all by myself (since my buddy was in the bathroom), and away from the crowd (because we were headed to check out Matt & Kim). When I was just jamming out by myself, a girl came up to me and told me she dug my vibe and asked if she could dance with me for a bit. Who am I to turn that down? When Ryan came out of the bathroom he looked extremely confused by what was going on. Which made me laugh.

Wayhome-MattKim-01

Matt & Kim – This concert was so much fun. These two interacted with the crowd so much, and so much dancing and sexual funny business. Like throwing blow up sex dolls into the crowd, and banging her drum with a dildo. Twerk it girl!

I hung out with a buddy from work that night, who was tenting in a different section, because my friends all went to bed super early. Who does that? But it was a great way to kick start the weekend and I went to bed tired but happy. The best way to go to bed right? Next post will be about days two and three, stay tuned!
