Tina Tran had a solo art show at #Hashtag Gallery in Toronto.
I first heard of Tina Tran on Instagram; she has this adorable witchy girl alphabet ‘zine (that I still would love to get) and from there I just started following her.
She goes to a lot of the conventions in the city: ComicCon, AnimeNorth, FanExpo. I’ve just yet to be able to get there to see/buy her stuff! So when she posted that she was doing a solo show, I knew that I had to get there.
It didn’t work that I could attend the opening night, but I was able to go one night before it ended. And it didn’t disappoint!
The theme of the show was ‘Femme Fatale’; which she had girls juxtaposed with deadly but beautiful plants and animals.
From the #Hashtag Gallery website:
“Femme Fatale” explores the notion that women do not have to reject their femininity in order to be seen as a force to be reckoned with. This collection features beautiful women juxtaposed with the likes of carnivorous plants and poisonous creatures. With this pairing, Tina Tran’s pastel coloured work illustrates the concept that there is more than meets the eye.
I love her use of colour! The blues are so calming.
I’m used to seeing her digital works or art prints, so seeing larger canvas’ and even wood pieces were really neat. There’s a depth to the original work that doesn’t always translate to the art print/digital.
I think this was my absolute favourite piece of the whole show. But alas, I do not have $600 to spend on artwork. Maybe one day!
I did purchase an art print of one of these fabulous ladies. I was torn between the 2 pieces but ended up going with my gut on how it made me feel. As much as I loved the flowers and I’m not really a water baby, the calming nature o the blues had me buying the underwater piece.
I’m so glad that I was able to make it out to see this in person. Totally worth it. Plus, it’s free to go have a look!
Check her out online (@imawonder) and she’ll have a booth at FanExpo this September long weekend in Toronto. I’m hoping to get there to see if she has the little ‘zine!
