As a new mom, I’m coming to terms with some new knowledge about my lady parts.
It’s amazing how much we aren’t taught about our bodies. There was a ton of stuff that I didn’t learn until being pregnant about hormones, and what the hell is going on inside me. And now, postpartum, my body is completely changing once again.
So when I got the invite to attend the Vagina Dialogues event for International Women’s Day, I was so excited to say yes! It’s been awhile since I’ve attended an event (since I’ve been pregnant and had Kaiden) and I am ready to get back out there.
I really had no idea what to expect, but it definitely was a fantastic event.
Held at the Drake Hotel, which is an amazing location in the heart of Queen West. The event was hosted by Dr. Marnie Luck, a naturopath specializing in women’s health. She hosts a great party. In support of Sistering, the non-profit organization that helps at-risk women, all the proceeds of the night were donated to them.
The first part of the night was the cocktail hour – oh Lordy, the food was delicious! I was definitely impressed by the spread. Sushi, veggies and dips, kimchi grilled cheese, parmesan fries, beef sliders, veggie spring rolls, the food just kept coming out. And it was so damn good. It satisfied so many cravings I didn’t even realize I had.
Then Dr. Marnie had a little science lesson about women and women’s health. There were a couple of things that I didn’t realize, like how just deep breathing and less stress can improve the health of your eggs. She got a little technical at some points, but it was a good overview of women’s health. She’s actually posted her whole session on her blog, check it out here.
After a short break (where there was more food and raffle tickets!), they opened a panel with 5 amazingly inspirational women to discuss things from inequality to orgasms (did you know there are 11 different kinds that women can have?) to what they want to teach their children. The panellists: Cheryl Rowe, Joyce Lo, Joanna Griffiths, Viktoria Kalenteris, and Charlotte Langley; are all such powerhouses in their fields and it was great to hear so many different takes to the same questions.
There was also an art piece that was super interesting, as well. Vagina moulds!
I think the best part was the diverse crowd that showed up for the event. Met a lovely couple of ladies who were so friendly, and it just was so refreshing to be in a room of women empowering women.
At the end of the night, they released the raffle winners and I managed to score myself a t-shirt! I’m super pumped about it, I think it will quickly become a favourite. Oh, and can’t forget about the swag bag!
I was so pleased to be able to attend this event, and I’m so glad that it was brought to my attention. I think that places and organizations like Sistering are so important, so please read about how to give back. I had a great night out celebrating women with so many amazing women. Definitely, a night to remember! For more photos of the event, visit here.
