Life :: Otaku Life

Otaku (おたく/オタク ?) is a Japanese term for people with obsessive interests, commonly the anime and manga fandom. Its contemporary usage originated with Akio Nakamori’s 1983 essay in Manga Burikko. – Definition from Google

Otaku Feature

This isn’t really something that I talk about a lot on here, but it’s actually a huge part of my life, and I want to incorporate it more on here.

I love Japanese culture, and manga.

I got into manga in grade 10, and I’ve never left. I watch anime, but not religiously. I prefer movies to actual TV series. I read manga obsessively, and I’ve dropped a pretty penny on volumes. I won’t lie, this obsession probably hasn’t done me any favours in the realism factor, they’re like romantic comedies except even more unrealistic, but I love them so much. I don’t really read anything other than shoujo, although I do throw a couple of sports related ones in there now and then.

Most of the time, if I’m procrastinating something, I’ll be reading manga. Sometimes I’ll read it online, and then buy it, sometimes I’ll buy it first and avoid it online. It also depends if it’s available here in Canada. Is this something that you read? I prefer Japanese manga to American graphic novels, mainly just due to preference of art styles.

Seriously though, I have an unhealthy attraction to the guys. Yes, they aren’t real. Yes, they are just drawings. No, I don’t care. I have lists of all the seriously good-looking guys from manga, and yes I will pick the book with hotter guys. #NoJudgement I know that it’s not real, and it hasn’t affected me from finding a relationship (love you Andrew), but between manga, rom-coms, and Disney, it definitely hasn’t made my life easier. Can I hashtag unrealisticrelationshipgoals?

So, the point of this post is that I’m not going to be ashamed of my life choices, and will be posting about series on here more often. They will probably be on here more than book reviews because lately I’ve been grabbing manga, not books.

If you’re interested in starting up reading, here are a few that I suggest!

  • Skip Beat! – This is still ongoing, but so, so good. It’s about acting and love, and the heroine is one of the best. She’s super independent, and determined never to love again. She’s working her way up in the acting world, and is quickly become a force to be reckoned with.
  • Fruits Basket – This one is adorable. What happens when your family is cursed with turning into one of the zodiac animals when you are hugged by the opposite sex? When Tohru’s mom dies, she starts living with the Sohma family, and goes about breaking their curse.

I feel so excited to be writing about something that is so near and dear to my heart! Let me know if you like manga/anime as well!
