Life :: Den Haag (The Hague)

The next stop on our journey: Den Haag (or The Hague)!

Hague, Netherlands, Travel

The Hague is the business centre of the Netherlands, so the architecture is very modern, much more so than in Amsterdam. We were visiting one of my Oma’s best friends, from back in the day, so it was lovely meeting her. It’s a little sad how different they are considering they are the same age, but I guess it just goes to show how staying active and going out affects the brain!

Also, as a note – The Hague is much, much cooler than Amsterdam, and even more so than Cuijk! Being so close to the sea means that it’s rainier (while we were there) and the wind is more fierce. Needless to say, I was just a little bit cold! Mainly because I didn’t have a hat. Next time I’ll be more prepared.

We arrived, got settled at our AirBnb, and then went out to meet up with . We went for afternoon tea/coffee/late lunch, and walked around the downtown core a little bit. It was raining pretty heavily at this point, so she took us to the Mesdag museum to see the panoramic painting of Schveningen. This was so much more impressive than I thought it would be. It’s massive, and super calming. It actually feels like you are on the beach back in the 1900’s. It’s even more interesting to go there and then head out to the beach and see how it’s changed for yourself.

After the museum, we split up again to get changed and cleaned up before heading out for dinner. I’ve never had Indonesian food before, and there’s a large population of Indonesians in The Hague. We went to her favourite restaurant and probably over indulged. The food was amazing. Some was spicy, but it was all manageable. Definitely will have to try and find a good Indonesian place around Toronto. Any suggestions?

The one thing I couldn’t get over was how light it still was out, even around 10pm. The sun was still leaving traces of dusky-twilight in the sky. So pretty.

We puttered around The Hague for 2 days, got a little bit of shopping done (they had a Primark!), ate more good food, had an amazing time relaxing with the family, and chilling with the cats that lived in the house we were staying in.

From here, we managed to fit in 2 day trips – one to Delft and one to Scheveningen (Posts to come). But all to soon it was over and we were headed back to Cuijk so that I could fly home. This trip was over all to soon! I already can’t wait until the cousins come out to Canada for a visit.signature1
