Life :: Danes In Distress Rescue

This past winter, Andrew and I were trying to adopt a dog. Specifically, a Great Dane.

After looking after Sonny for a couple months, I had decided that I wanted a dog, and that I enjoyed having a dog in my life. Doing some research online, I stumbled across Danes in Distress, an Ontario Great Dane rescue.

Great Danes are a breed that I love. Andrew and I actually bonded over that fact when we first met. While Danes aren’t a breed either of us had ever had, we just loved them. I love the size of them, and the fact that they’re just giant furbabies. They had a litter of puppies up for adoption, and Andrew and I wanted one! We missed out just on the pups though, so we currently don’t have a dog.

It was an interesting process though, which is more what I want to write about.

First, you fill out the adoption application. It’s not short by any means. And that’s understandable. These dogs have already been surrendered or rescued once, and they want to place them in their forever homes. Once the application is filled out and processed, you then get house inspection done.

One of their volunteers comes by and checks out the house, the backyard, and talks to the family. Almost like an interview but definitely more relaxed. I was extremely nervous for this portion, but it went by quickly and fine. I don’t have Dane experience, but I have a lot of animal experience.

We got put on the waiting list, and while we’re still on it, and I keep my eye out on the Facebook page, right now we’ve decided to put getting a dog on hold (well, I decided that). If we had gotten a pup, it would have been fine and I’d make it work, but I took it as a sign that we weren’t really in the right place to get a dog yet. Plus, Kumo has apparently decided to be terrible towards other animals. And I love my baby cat too much to put him in a position where he can’t be in his own house since he came first.

If you’re interested in adopting a Great Dane (in Ontario), Danes in Distress having their Spring fundraiser on May 15, 2016. You can find all the details here. Follow the Danes In Distress Facebook page for the most up-to-date information and pictures of the dogs!

I’m a firm believer that when we’re supposed to have a dog, it’ll happen. All of our dogs have come into our lives that way, and I’m not going to mess with that. So for now, I’ll just babysit other dogs, and wait until life decides that we should have one.
