Can I even say Minimalism is my word of the year if I never talk about it?
I’ve done two posts in the past 4 years. One in 2015, and one in 2017. Regardless, I think it’s time for a check-in. In 2015, I was in a completely different house and mindset. I lived in a basement apartment and had no kids (and they weren’t even on the radar). By 2017, we had moved into our current house and I had just had Kaiden. My concept of minimalism has been revamped.
With the resurgence of Marie Kondo fans, thanks to her new Netflix show, I’ve been re-motivated to get back to minimalism. In 2015, I mentioned her through The Lavendaire’s videos, and did more of a purge than an organization. 2017 was another purge of things. I actually like the purging aspect of cleaning up. So satisfying.
So what did minimalism in 2019 look like?
I’ve been trying to not bring more into my house. I’ve been trying to use what I already have instead of never getting around to it. Paring down and only buying what fits and what’s a good price. Going for the experience over the material.
Since having Kaiden brought an influx of baby-related items into the house, the organization has been key. It helps that he’s a toddler now and getting into everything. So keeping things up and away is more priority than ever. I cannot wait until he’s not playing with toys and I can pass them along to the next generation of kids.
It also makes it a little easier being on a smaller income and not having the disposable income to splurge frequently. I try not to spend too much money on anything nowadays.
Of course, I’ve purged things this time around.
I went through the bathroom and got rid of everything old and gross. But I reorganized and put things away properly. I sorted through all the paper and started putting away scrapbook material that I’m not getting to (yet). Sorting Tupperware in the kitchen and getting rid of pots and pans that I never touched when cooking. I did replace them with new working pans, but it makes me so happy to use them and have them work.
I streamlined my wardrobe to be more uniform in colour (makes washing so much easier) and I’m committing myself to fold and put away immediately. I didn’t get rid of clothes (because pregnant) but will do it probably around Christmas time.
I know that once my kids have grown out of what I currently have for them another purge will happen. I’m not overly sentimental about clothing or toys, so I think that while I’ll save some things most will be passed on.
I feel so much lighter this time around and I feel like it shows. I feel happy coming home and spending so much time in the house.
Have you done the KonMari method? Addicted to it on Netflix? Have you decluttered anything in your home? Let me know!
