Review :: House Of Night Series

I don’t know why I didn’t read this series sooner. House of Night brings together the cliché vampire trend in a completely different way than I’ve read before.

The House of Night series is set in a time where vampires are completely normal (although still slightly feared). It’s a little darker, because you can become “Marked” at any time, and it’s not 100% guaranteed that you’ll become a full vampire. Zoey is “Marked” by more than just the normal way, she’s been touched by the Goddess Nyx, the goddess of the night and of vampires. Given a daunting task by the Goddess, she’s struggles to find balance with being a fledgling vamp, touched by the goddess, and the normal problems of any 16 year old.

Since this series is quite long, I’m not going to break it down book by book like I did for past reviews.

The series starts with Marked and takes us through the more ritualistic way the vampires conduct their nights, with ceremony and service to the Goddess. You learn about the hierarchy of the vampire clan, and how the House of Night school works.

As you’re introduced to characters, you find them rooting for them and I feel like the characters all have quite good depth and background stories. The plot line is good too, adding just enough mystery and thriller-ness, as well as romance and sadness. I still haven’t finished the whole series yet, but it’s enough to make me want to tap into my spiritual side. I’ve already done a cleansing with sage that was inspired by this series!

Overall, it’s a series that shouldn’t be missed if you’re interested in any of the following subjects:

Young Adult
Vampires
Magic
Goddesses
Native American myths

I need to pick this back up again and finish it off, but it’s so good, and I cannot recommend it enough.

You’ll like this if you enjoyed Twilight and Vampire Academy, or anything that P.C. Cast writes.
