Revealing My Best Hair With Prose Custom Hair Care

Prose custom hair care shows up on my Instagram feed all the time.

Another example of Instagram Marketing working on me. I’ve been seeing Prose Hair Care ads with women whose hair looks like mine (and similar ethnicity to me) and getting awesomely wavy hair. Since Eli, post-pregnancy hair has been less pin-straight and way more wavy. If only my high school self could see my hair now.

So I decided to make the jump. I was hoping that since it was custom there would be fewer ingredients that would irritate my scalp because while my hair has gotten more texture, my scalp is WAY more sensitive.

Creating My Custom Blend

I filled out the quiz (I love me a quiz). I decided to try the shampoo, the leave-in conditioner, and the curl cream. I don’t use regular conditioners enough to warrant buying one and I never finish them in tandem.

The blend itself sounded fine. I went with no fragrance. My key ingredients were Jasmin Flower Water and Yucca Stem Extract for the shampoo. The leave-in conditioner’s key ingredients were Kalahari Melon Oil and Grape Seed Oil. In the curl cream, it was Pequi Oil and Linseed Extract.

The packaging and aesthetic are on point. I love the little bottles! They look super nice on the shelf.

The Results

Unfortunately for me and my scalp, I am quite allergic to the shampoo. Once it arrived, I realized that one of the ingredients was Cocamidopropyl Betaine which through significant trial and error is a no-go on my skin (if it’s in the top 5 ingredients). I immediately noticed that my scalp was drier. I did try it out for as long as I could (I lasted almost 3 weeks) but had to stop. My eczema/psoriasis was so bad. So this will not be a repurchase for me.

The Pros:

I am still using the leave-in conditioner and the curl cream. I like both; they don’t irritate my scalp and work well. I enjoyed that there was no fragrance or scent to any of the products. I liked how my hair felt after using the shampoo and I wanted it to work with my hair so badly.

The Cons:

Besides the obvious, the other con would be the price. The products worked well, but I don’t think it’s worth the price tag. The bottles are small (the leave-in conditioner is only 5.1 oz), so at $37, it’s not a lot of bang for the buck. And is it better than other cheaper ones that I’ve used? Probably not.

This could be a pro or a con, depending on your preferences, but it is a subscription service. It saves you money, and you can skip/snooze an order easily. But you have to remember to keep on top of it otherwise it’ll just auto-charge you, even if you want to make changes.

I wanted this to work for me but it wasn’t meant to be. Have you tried this one? I’ve heard that it’s either love or hate for Prose, and I’m curious about your experience!
