Life :: Week No. 17 – Book Reviews

Another dollar, another day. Alright, so not quite that black and white, but is it just me or are the days just zooming by?

God of War – Read this awhile ago.
This book was a splurge and spur of the moment. I was browsing the bargain table at Chapters when the cover caught my eye. Originally, I bought the book thinking of my brother, who loves all things old and historical. Instead, I read the first couple of pages in store and was hooked. I had to buy it, and $6.99 was a good deal for the size of the book. And it was amazing. Granted, the subject matter could be a little hard to swallow at times, but it was excellent because it read like an actual story. It didn’t seem like you were reading about history. Narrated by Ptolemy I, Alexander’s friend throughout his life, it takes place in 300 B.C. during the reign of Alexander the Great, how he lived and died. I feel like this is a great start to getting into history, or for someone like me who enjoys history but wants to learn while reading something entertaining. If you are a history fan, I definitely recommend this!

A Dance With Dragons – A Song of Ice and Fire
I have finally caught up with the television series, but the books are 100 times more enrapturing, I think. Of course, to each their own, but the books just have so much more depth to them. I cannot wait until the next one, because I think that it will just bring a whole bunch of amazing story back into the thick of it. So many characters went untouched in the fifth one, and I can’t wait to see them again.

Tortall and Other Stories
Tamora Pierce is one of my absolute favourite young adult fantasy authors. I stumbled across her books back in grade school when one of her characters had the ability to talk to animals and was hooked ever since. I still enjoy reading all of her novels, and I love the Tortall series. All the characters intertwine together, and just makes the stories more enjoyable. This was a collection of stories that helped supplement past stories, and short standalone stories. Overall very enjoyable, especially since I love her writing style. I would definitely check them out, even though they are a quick read!

What books are next up on the to-read list? Russell Brand’s Booky-Wook 2, Lean In, Becoming Jane Eyre. Any suggestions for me this month?
