Life :: Garden Planning

It’s that time of year!!! SPRING! Now that spring has finally arrived (we hope…), Andrew and I have been busily planning our attack on the garden.

Last year, we really did nothing with our new garden, and just let it sit there really. Andrew’s mom went and cut back all of the bushes, but we weren’t really focusing or caring what happened back there. Now that the inside of the house is pretty much all complete, we’re looking at the yard and thinking, something needs to be done here.

Last month, Andrew had the bobcat so he managed to rip apart our front yard. No more bushes, and a wider driveway! I have a small little area that I’ll be putting flowers in front of the window to make it look pretty. I’m so excited.

Now we need to tackle the backyard.

The backyard… is a little more complicated. I know what I want to plant, I just don’t know where I should be planting it! I think a little more research is in order.

Plus, the spot that I want to put a veggie garden might be in the sun too much – the sun’s practically burnt my hydrangea that I had sitting there for a day.

My goal with the garden is for the wildlife. I want to encourage the local animals (aka the squirrels and bunnies) to continue to visit, so I want to plant items that they can munch on, and it won’t make much of a difference to my garden. I want to plant flowers that encourage bees and hummingbirds to stop by and be able to pollenate. I kind of like the idea that it’ll be a little ‘wild’ to look at, because that’s the beauty of Mother Nature!

Andrew’s goal is for entertainment. We have this huge flat area that used to be the above-ground pool and he wants to turn it into an entertainment area. Sofas, fire pit, possible TV for watching movies outside.  It should make for an interesting space. I’m not 100% sold on the TV-Outside idea, but we’ll see. I think we need to get our fences re-done first… Perhaps I should be reminding Andrew of that small detail?

Any tips and tricks are definitely welcome – I have a little bit of a ‘black’ thumb unfortunately. Anything I should be planting in particular?
