This has been a topic on my mind for a while, and has also been in my blog drafts for a long time. It’s something that’s kind of embarrassing, but I’m learning to come to terms with it in real life, but still a little embarrassing to admit to the internet.
I don’t have many female friends. A couple years back, I lost the main group of friends that I hung out with, and then I was so busy that it didn’t really matter to me anymore. But lately, I’d been craving female interaction like you wouldn’t believe. I have a bunch of male friends, but I had whittled my girl friend list down to one, and she lives in BC. Not very easy to just call up to grab a coffee [no matter how much I wish she lived closer…].
So, I decided to take my search online. I wasn’t having any luck trying to find people in real life, since they either had established friend groups, or they always seem to be male. I love my guy friends, but they don’t like going shopping. So I went to Craigslist. Most people when I tell them this all think I’m crazy. But it works. Not 100% of the time, but I’ve made some pretty good contact, and one of them I see almost weekly [and count her as one of my best friends]. If that’s not success, I don’t know what is.
Perhaps it’s because I’m a blogger, or so active on Twitter, but it seems like it’s not such a rare thing. Many of the UK bloggers who are friends on Twitter finally meet in person for meet-ups or blogger brunches etc. I think probably the venue that I chose to find friends is what makes it a bit weird. I occasionally check the posts every now and again, and I’ve posted myself on there twice.
