Excuse me, HOW IS MY BABY BOY SIX ALREADY??
Yesterday my eldest son, Kaiden, turned 6 and I am unprepared. He already looks and acts like he’s 6 going on 16. But where did my baby boy go?
First, I can’t believe I’ve been a Mom for SIX years already. Where did that time go? Let alone be the Mom of two boys. I wouldn’t trade it for the world though!
This past weekend we hosted his birthday party for family, friends, and a bunch of kiddos from his class. He invited 10 friends over and they had a blast! We are lucky enough that we really have the perfect backyard for hosting parties, so we don’t have to figure out another place to go. We’ve been 2 for 2 in terms of weather as well! An absolute BEAUTY of a day, 20 degrees Celsius and barely a cloud in the sky.
For the past couple of years (since the shutdown), we’ve rented a large bouncy castle for the boys. At first, it was to keep them excited even though we couldn’t have a party. Then it just seemed to be such a hit, the boys constantly requested them! And now it seems like it’s our thing.
Since he’s in a mixed class of 4, 5, and 6-year-olds, it was some of the kids’ first time on a bouncy castle. It’s the best way to drain energy. They all slept great that night. And it was really nice to connect with some of the parents! A couple of them stayed the entire time, while most of the older kids’ parents (who had stayed last year) just did a drop. I enjoyed getting to know the parents better and we just had a great time chatting while the kids ran themselves silly.
But so cute! It’s so interesting to see kids interacting with each other and trying to figure out what they need and what they want to do. We forget as adults how hard it is to be social and balance friend groups when you barely have a handle on your own emotions. Social situations as an adult are hard enough!
Then, it was time for them to leave, and the family showed up for a BBQ dinner.
That meant more kids for Kaiden to play with on the castle. I’m pretty sure he was on that thing for 6 hours straight. When I put Kaiden and Eli to bed, I’m sure they were asleep before their heads touched the pillows.
This wasn’t as large a party as we’ve hosted in past years. It was probably the perfect size. We can do a bigger one for Andrew’s birthday at the end of the summer, but for the kids it was perfect. We invited our friends with kids and immediate family. Eli’s birthday is in the following 2 weeks so we’ll be hosting another BBQ, but since he’s not in school he won’t have as many friends there. But that’s planning for another day.
And then Mother’s Day.
They spent it on the bouncy castle, and quietly building all of the new Lego he received. I deep-cleaned my car with zero interruptions, made dinner and had a bath once they went to bed.
A perfect weekend.
I’m so proud of the little kid my baby boy is growing into, and I can’t wait to see him progress into the man he will be.
Love him so much!
