Monsters Within – a great kick-off to the New Year.
This box was a great kick-off to the new year. Lots of amazing artists in this box!
I’m always happy when they include something for the kitchen, and I’m obsessed with kitchen towels. It features a quote from These Hollow Vows by Lexi Ryan and I can’t wait to start using it. I love having bookish things “hidden” around the house.
The trinket dishes I’m really into, which I didn’t think I would be. I’m really enjoying the fact that they are consistent with the colour scheme. The black-and-gold is very nice and classy in an understated way. This month features James Herondale from The Last Hour series by Cassandra Clare. I’m not a huge fan of Clare’s works but the artwork is lovely.
The metal bookmark is featuring Aaron from this month’s book – Only a Monster. I don’t generally use bookmarks, so I’m getting a nice collection. The metal ones are always so nicely made and it’s designed by Arz28.
I didn’t do the last puzzle that came in the box, but I did this one. I’ve recently discovered that I don’t mind puzzles and this one is pretty fun! It has August Flynn from This Savage Song by V.E. Schwab.
I love enamel pins! My collection is growing quite nicely, and I’ll need to figure out where they’ll go once we renovate the bedroom (and I lose my pinboard). This one is inspired by the Scythe series by Neal Shusterman.
The tarot cards this month feature Cassius and Sevro from the Red Rising series. Honestly, I’m obsessed with these tarot cards. I have to get a full picture of all the ones I have. I know that I’ve got the full set of pentacles. They look so amazing all together.
January’s ‘Monster’s Within’ themed book is Only a Monster by Vanessa Len.
With the sweeping romance of Passenger and the dark fantasy edge of This Savage Song, this standout YA contemporary fantasy debut from Vanessa Len, is the first in a planned trilogy.
It should have been the perfect summer. Sent to stay with her late mother’s eccentric family in London, sixteen-year-old Joan is determined to enjoy herself. She loves her nerdy job at the historic Holland House, and when her super cute co-worker Nick asks her on a date, it feels like everything is falling into place.
But she soon learns the truth. Her family aren’t just eccentric: they’re monsters, with terrifying, hidden powers. And Nick isn’t just a cute boy: he’s a legendary monster slayer, who will do anything to bring them down.
As she battles Nick, Joan is forced to work with the beautiful and ruthless Aaron Oliver, heir to a monster family that hates her own. She’ll have to embrace her own monstrousness if she is to save herself, and her family. Because in this story . . .
. . . she is not the hero.

This book sounds amazing.
The art on the inside covers is stunning. Fairyloot switched to the inside covers instead of the dust jacket and I prefer that. It’s nice to always see the art without having to take the jacket off.
I haven’t read this one yet, but I’m definitely getting to it sooner than later. I’ve been powering through and binge-reading quite a bit this month already so I know I can do it.
Time travel is one of my favourite tropes and it’s something that can be done well or terribly. I’m excited to see how this one handles it! Monsters Within is a great theme because it can mean literally or figuratively, and I think that this book actually does both? But I’ll have to read it to find out.
